Sustainable Fashion Takes the Spotlight on Zero-Waste Day 2025 On March 30, 2025, the United Nations will mark the third International Day of Zero Waste, focusing on the fashion and textile industry's role in tackling global waste pollution. The theme for this year, "Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles," underscores the need for the rapidly growing sector to adopt sustainable practices, reduce waste, and embrace circular production. The fashion industry contributes significantly to the planet's waste and pollution crisis. With 92 million tonnes of textile waste produced annually, equivalent to a garbage truck of clothes being discarded every second, the environmental toll is immense. The sector is also responsible for 2–8% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 9% of microplastic pollution in oceans. Experts believe that adopting a zero-waste approach could transform the fashion industry by reducing waste generation and supporting global waste management efforts. UNEP’s Jacqueline Alvarez emphasized that shifting to sustainable practices will have long-term economic and environmental benefits for society. Global events and activities will take place on Zero-Waste Day to raise awareness of local waste reduction efforts. UNEP and UN-Habitat are encouraging stakeholders to participate and contribute to building a more sustainable, circular economy.
